Ultrastructure of the flagellar apparatus of Oxyrrhis marina

چکیده
Oxyrrhis marina, like all dinoflagellates, possesses one transverse and ene longitudinal flagellum, which show structural differences. The transverse flagellum contains a small fibre, 20 nm in diameter, associated with doublet no.7, whereas the longitudinal flagellum is sustained by a large (200-300 rim) hollow structure closely resembling the paraflagellar rod described by several authors in kinetoplastidae and in euglenoids. This structure is made up of a hemlcylindrical network of filaments which are often linked on one side to the outer doublet no. 4, and on the other side to a dense plate. Another thinner filamentous network closes this hemicyclinder. In cross-section, the wall of this structure is made up of 8 filaments 2 4 nm in diameter that show a thicker periodic structure. In longitudinal section the same filaments appear arranged in periodic rhombus meshes or a helicoidal pattern, depending on the orientation of the section relative to the axoneme.

The protozoa dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina contains selenoproteins and the relevant translation apparatus.
In the phylogenetic tree, selenoproteins and the corresponding translation machinery are found in Archaea, Eubacteria, and animals, but not in fungi and higher plants. As very little is known about Protozoa, we searched for the presence of selenoproteins in the primitive dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina, belonging to the Protoctista kingdom. Four selenoproteins could be obtained from O. marina ce...

Regenerated extracellular NH4 (+)in laboratory batch cultures of the heterotrophic marine microzooplankter Oxyrrhis marina affects the strength and consistency of chemotaxes elicited by synthetic and biogenic chemoattractants. The ecological relevance of experiments with batch-cultured O. marina and limitations of the microcapillary assay for the study of chemosensory behaviours are discussed.

متن کاملMultiple protein phylogenies show that Oxyrrhis marina and Perkinsus marinus are early branches of the dinoflagellate lineage.
Oxyrrhis marina and Perkinsus marinus are two alveolate species of key taxonomic position with respect to the divergence of apicomplexans and dinoflagellates. New sequences from Oxyrrhis, Perkinsus and a number of dinoflagellates were added to datasets of small-subunit (SSU) rRNA, actin, alpha-tubulin and beta-tubulin sequences, as well as to a combined dataset of all three protein-coding genes...
